Every project we undertake reflect a unwavering dedication.
From concept to completion we use cutting-edge technology.
J.A. Polito & Sons is a Shrewsbury, Massachusetts-based public works contractor serving municipalities, public agencies and project partners throughout the region.
Our experience is rooted in the construction and rehabilitation of critical infrastructure – from water and sewer systems to drainage, treatment facilities, underground utilities and complex civil construction.
We understand that public works construction is different.
The job doesn’t happen in isolation. Our crews are often working around active roadways, existing utilities, homes, businesses and infrastructure that communities depend on every day.
That requires more than equipment and manpower. It requires experience, coordination and an understanding of how to get demanding work done in real-world conditions.
In 1949, Joe Polito, Sr. and his wife, Lena, decided to build something of their own. With a used government-surplus International TD-18 bulldozer, a wheelbarrow, and a few hand shovels, they started J. A. Polito & Sons, Inc. in Worcester County.
Joe quickly recognized an opportunity in public works. What began with site development soon grew into water and sewer construction, as Joe built a reputation for dependable work throughout Central Massachusetts. By the 1950s, the Polito name was becoming a familiar sight on municipal streets throughout the region.
Joe’s sons, Francis and Joe Jr., grew up in the business, learning the trade from the ground up. Through the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, the company took on increasingly challenging water and sewer projects throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire – including deep interceptor sewers, major water systems, difficult rock excavation, dewatering, blasting, and river crossings involving pipe up to 72 inches in diameter.
In 1986, the third generation arrived when Kenny Polito joined the company full-time. After years working in the field, operating equipment, running crews, and learning every side of the business, Kenny became president in 1992. Under his leadership, Polito & Sons adopted a focused approach: pursue the right projects and put quality ahead of quantity.
That philosophy continues today.
More than 75 years after Joe and Lena started with one bulldozer and a few hand tools, J. A. Polito & Sons remains a family-owned utility contractor based in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. From complex municipal water and sewer projects to sitework and underground infrastructure, the company continues to combine generations of experience with hands-on leadership and a commitment to doing the job right.
And as the next generation prepares to join the business, the Polito story continues – built on family, hard work, and a simple belief that has guided the company from the beginning:
Quality over quantity. Every project. Every time.
Years in the field provide perspective that can't be replicated on paper. Our team brings practical construction knowledge to every project.
The right crews, equipment and resources allow us to take on challenging infrastructure work and adapt to changing project conditions.
Public work demands accountability - to our clients, our project partners and the communities where we're working.
Our name goes on every project we complete. We take that seriously.
